Zimbabwe Conservation Safari

Zimbabwe Conservation Safari

12 Days in Zimbabwe

This safari is everything that Moraway Adventures values!

We created this active safari to provide exceptional wildlife viewing with some of the top guides on the continent while also raising funds to support important conservation and community development projects in Zimbabwe. Designed for travelers looking to go beyond just game drives, our guests will get an unscripted and up-close look at what it takes to support and safeguard wildlife while mitigating human-wildlife conflicts in local villages.

Historically, these communities saw no benefit from a wildlife tourism industry. To these locals, wildlife was a nuisance: elephants eating their crops and lions killing their livestock. There was no incentive to protect wildlife. Tourists were people who traveled through but spent their money elsewhere.

Mark Butcher and his team of guides and lodges have worked for over 20 years to change this reality. By building their safari lodges and camps on community-owned lands, a symbiotic relationship began between conservation, responsible tourism and local communities. This promoted the conservation of the local wildlife and natural resources while at the same time adding significantly to the experience for the responsible safari enthusiast.

Included in the cost of this safari is a per person donation toward new solar and hybrid water resources for wildlife in and around Hwange National Park and drinking water for local villages. In this way, every guest is making a direct positive impact on wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe as well as improving the lives of the people who live on the very doorstep of the park.

We hope you’ll join us!

Your Trip Leaders and Guide(s):

Mark Butcher
Lead Guide

Although Butch manages the safari lodges and community relations for Invelo Safari Lodges, he spends as much time as he can with guests in the bush, or at least to share stories in the lodges. His wildlife career started in 1979, when he became a ranger for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management. He completed a BSc in Zoology and Botany at Rhodes University, before moving on to work for Zimbabwe’s Forestry Commission. As Provincial Wildlife Officer, Butch was responsible for all the wildlife that roamed within 1.8-million acres of indigenous forest. Whilst undertaking this enormous task, he quickly discovered how essential the local people’s support was to the wellbeing of the ecosystem. Butch began to develop programs that would engage the local people who have quickly realized the financial prosperity from shared park fees and visits from safari travelers thereby generating a vested interest among communities of protecting wildlife and the natural ecosystems. Mark is widely respected as one of the very best Zimbabwe Pro-Guides, a group regarded as the best guides on the continent.

Chris Moriarty
Trip Leader

Chris developed his love of Africa and native culture living in a rural Namibian village for two years while teaching in the U.S. Peace Corps. From the jungles of Uganda to the Kalahari Desert, he has traveled to remote corners of the African continent on numerous private and self-guided safaris in eleven countries. He holds a master’s degree in International Development from the University of Denver. International travel, conservation and community development have shaped his life and core values and underpins his belief that travel can be a force for good in the world. Chris' enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge and experience to design transformational and impactful travel opportunities led him to start Moraway Adventures. Chris is a Wilderness EMT and volunteers with the Alpine Search and Rescue Team in Bozeman, Montana.

Jon Burnham
Trip Leader

Jonathan has worked in ecotourism for the last decade and has almost 30 countries under his belt. He's a seasoned guide having led trips through three countries, developed trips and adventures on every continent, and has raised over $500,000 for conservation efforts as a volunteer in just the last four years. Jon's core belief is that travel can be a positive influence on the world. In everything he does, he tries to leave things better than he found them and this is certainly true for everyone who has met him. When he's not saving the world you can find him snapping photos or racing Ironman triathlons.
